MARINE & WATERFRONT

Cover for marinas, berths and waterfront premises.

Marinas, yards and waterfront buildings face a harder job than most: open quaysides, valuable vessels, contractors coming and going, and salt air that eats equipment not specified for it.

WHAT MATTERS HERE

Built for the quayside, not just the car park.

Waterfront premises combine public access with very high-value assets. The systems that work here are specified for the environment and designed around who is allowed onto which pontoon.

Control pontoon access

Gates and readers keep berth holders, crew and contractors to the pontoons and facilities they are entitled to use.

Specified for salt air

Corrosion-rated housings, marine-grade fixings and sealed cabling, so equipment lasts rather than failing in its second winter.

Watch quaysides and fuel

Cameras across berths, fuel points, cranes and hard standing, with footage clear enough to be worth having.

Manage crew and contractors

Issue time-limited access for refit crews and visiting contractors, and withdraw it the day the job finishes.

Salt air is the reason marine installations fail

Equipment specified for an office car park does not last on a quayside. Salt-laden air corrodes housings, fixings and connectors; UV degrades cable and seals; and the constant damp finds every joint that was not made properly. The failure is rarely dramatic — cameras simply start dropping out in their second winter, and the system stops being trusted.

So the specification changes: marine-grade stainless fixings, housings rated for the environment, connectors sealed rather than taped, and containment chosen to survive being outdoors on the water rather than indoors in a riser.

It costs more at installation and considerably less over five years. If a system on the water was specified as though it were inland, you generally find out around year two.

The hard part is who is allowed where

A marina is not one premises. It is berth holders who should reach their own pontoon, crew who need the facilities, contractors working on a specific vessel for a fortnight, fuel and crane areas that only certain people should touch, and a public promenade running through the middle of it.

Access control does the work that fencing cannot. Pontoon gates and facility doors read a credential and decide, so a berth holder reaches their berth, a visiting crew member gets the showers and laundry but not the yard, and a refit contractor gets a credential that stops working the day the job ends.

Cameras then cover the places where value concentrates: berths, the hard standing, fuel points, cranes and the yard gates.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Security for marine and waterfront premises — your questions answered.

Will the equipment actually survive the salt air?

If it is specified for it, yes. That means marine-grade fixings, appropriately rated housings and properly sealed terminations rather than standard kit hoping for the best. We specify for the location, and we will tell you where the corners cannot be cut.

Can we give visiting crew or contractors temporary access?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons marinas move to access control. Credentials can be issued for a set period and expire on their own, so nobody has to remember to collect a key when a refit finishes.

Can you cover the water as well as the quayside?

To a degree. Cameras cover berths, pontoons and approaches well; open water is harder and depends on distance, lighting and what you actually need to see. We will be realistic about what is achievable before you spend anything.

Can access records line up with our berth holder list?

That is the aim — credentials issued against berths and contracts so the access list reflects who is genuinely entitled to be there. How closely it integrates depends on the management system you run, which we would look at during the survey.
