Home Security Tips: Simple Ways to Better Protect Your Home in Gibraltar

Home security doesn’t always mean installing lots of technology. In many cases, the most effective protection comes from combining simple everyday habits with the right security measures.

At Fortify Security Systems, we believe security should be practical. CCTV cameras and intruder alarms can provide an important additional layer of protection, but there are also plenty of things homeowners can do themselves.

Here are some straightforward ways to make your home more secure.

1. Lock Your Door – Even When You’re Home

It sounds obvious, but an unlocked door remains one of the simplest ways for somebody to gain access to a property.

This can be particularly relevant in Gibraltar, where many of us live in apartment blocks with communal entrances.A secure main entrance doesn’t necessarily mean your individual apartment door should be left unlocked.

Make locking your front door part of your normal routine, whether you’re leaving for the day or staying at home.

2. Think About Your Apartment Building’s Main Entrance

Security doesn’t necessarily begin at your own front door.

If you live in an apartment building, avoid automatically opening the communal entrance when somebody rings the intercom. If you’re not expecting anyone, establish who they are before allowing access.

Modern video intercom and door-entry systems can make this considerably easier by allowing residents to see and speak to visitors before opening the door.

3. Don’t Advertise That Nobody Is Home

If you’re going away, avoid making it obvious that your property is empty.

Smart plugs and lighting timers can be used to switch lights on and off at appropriate times.

Mail shouldn’t be allowed to accumulate unnecessarily, and where possible, ask somebody you trust to check the property periodically.

It’s also worth thinking about what you’re sharing online. Posting holiday photographs while you’re still away can unintentionally reveal that your home is currently unoccupied.

There’ll still be plenty of time to share them when you’re back.

4. Keep Valuables Away From Windows

Take a look through your windows from outside.

Can you see laptops, tablets, handbags, keys or other valuable items?

Where practical, keep valuable belongings away from easily visible areas. Car and property keys should also be kept somewhere sensible rather than immediately beside an entrance or window.

5. Lighting Can Be Part of Your Security

Exterior lighting can help remove dark areas around entrances, terraces and other vulnerable parts of a property.

Motion-activated lighting can be particularly useful because it only activates when movement is detected.

Good lighting also complements CCTV by potentially improving the quality of images captured around a property.

6. CCTV Is Only Useful If It’s Working

One of the most common mistakes with CCTV is assuming that because the cameras are physically there, everything must be working.

Periodically check your system. Can you view all your cameras? Are the lenses clean? Are the camera angles still correct? Is the date and time accurate? Most importantly, is the system actually recording?

There’s nothing worse than discovering after an incident that a recorder stopped storing footage several weeks earlier.

This is one of the reasons Fortify introduced our Home CCTV Care maintenance service.

7. Test Your Intruder Alarm

The same principle applies to an alarm system.

An alarm shouldn’t simply sit on the wall for years without being checked.

Sensors, batteries, sirens, door contacts, communications and smartphone notifications should be tested periodically to make sure everything responds as expected.

If your alarm sends notifications to your phone, check that the application is still logged in and that notifications haven’t accidentally been disabled.

8. Consider Security in Layers

There’s rarely one single product that makes a property secure.

A better approach is to think about security in layers: Secure doors and windows → controlled entry → lighting → intruder detection → CCTV → alerts and monitoring.

Each layer provides something different.

For example, an alarm can alert you to an intrusion while CCTV can help you understand what’s happening. A video doorbell or intercom can help you identify somebody before you open the door in the first place.

9. Don’t Forget Balconies, Terraces and Secondary Entrances

The front door naturally gets most of the attention, but consider every realistic way somebody could enter the property.

Ground-floor apartments in particular may have accessible windows, terraces or patio doors.

Depending on the property, wireless door contacts, window sensors, curtain detectors and motion detectors can provide additional protection without requiring extensive cabling.

10. If Something Doesn’t Look Right, Pay Attention

Security is also about awareness. If you notice unusual activity around your building, communal areas, garages or neighbouring properties, don’t simply ignore it.

Knowing your surroundings and looking out for neighbours can be an effective part of keeping a community safer.

Technology Should Make Security Simpler Modern home security has become significantly more accessible.

Wireless CCTV, smart video doorbells and wireless intruder alarms mean that many homes can now be protected without extensive cabling or disruptive installation work.

Depending on the system, homeowners can receive alerts, view cameras, arm or disarm an alarm and check their property directly from a smartphone.

However, technology should complement good security habits rather than replace them.

Not Sure How Secure Your Home Is? Sometimes an independent look at a property can identify things you’ve simply become accustomed to.

Fortify Security Systems can assess your property and discuss sensible options based on the actual risks and requirements rather than automatically recommending the biggest system available.

We provide solutions including CCTV, wireless CCTV, intruder alarms, video doorbells, door-entry systems, access control and ongoing maintenance for homes and businesses throughout Gibraltar.

And we’ll continue sharing practical security advice that everyone can use — whether you’re a Fortify customer or not.
